The Thief crosses his arms and leans up against the wall, thinking about this.
"I took my first human form when men were moving out of caves and when they started thinking of things as his and mine. I was created when people first gained the idea... the concept of keeping things to themselves and not wanting others to have them," he says. "So quite a while back. I stole this human body six, seven hundred years ago."
"Then you've had a lot longer of a time to perfect this. I mean, I didn't used to be like this... I didn't used to be a monster."
But he undeniably is, now. The kind of monster that waits in the shadows, the one that parents tell their children isn't hiding in the closet or under the bed.
He laughs. "You're not a monster! You're no more a monster than the sunlight or a rain storm! You are an essential part of human nature. Without us humanity would still be living in caves without a sentient thought to their little fuzzy heads."
"Exactly. You cause fear. Fear is the necessity of invention. If people weren't afraid of things they wouldn't do anything. People are afraid of dying so they create medicines to make their lives longer. People are afraid of starving so they create ways to make food easier. People are afraid of staying in one place and rotting away, so they create ways to go to new places. See!"
"Destruction is necessary in a metaphysical sense, I guess. Most people don't think it's necessarily in a day to day sense. It's scary. It's frustrating. It seems counterproductive."
"Step into the light then, and we'll see." The problem is what Ginsberg is is not a secret, it's just an unknown.
The Thief steps into the light and his shadow crawls forward to pluck at Ginsberg's feet. It doesn't feel like anything, it's just a shadow, but it still tries.
He takes a few cautious steps into the light, and all at once, his figure becomes much more clear. He looks completely human, completely solid, but there's still a... wrongness about him. Something that doesn't quite feel natural. Something that another shadow creature will likely pick up on.
"What am I?" he asks, staring at the Thief curiously.

He gives Ginsberg a bit of a wry grin, the joke amusing only to himself. Though somewhere the Fool scowls at something and he doesn't know why.
